We were stopped by traffic police over the weekend for driving a bit over the speed limit. He checked that the inspection had expired on our van over 10 months ago and we missed it completely.
He did not give us a speeding ticket, but we got a NJ 8-1 - Failure to inspect ticket and I saw online that it costs $130!!
We now have the inspection done, and was wondering if I could go to court and expect some leniency?
Thanks in advance!
Troll? Why you want to fight this ? Count yourself lucky that you are out of this by just payin $130.

How about reading the statute, not a website?
"39:8-9.b. An owner or lessee who:
(1) Fails or refuses to have a motor vehicle examined . or
(2) . fails or refuses to place or display a certificate of approval, rejection sticker or
(3) Fails or refuses to place the motor vehicle in proper condition . shall be subject to a fine of not less than $100 or more than $200 .
c. A person who fraudulently obtains . or displays . a fictitious, altered, or stolen certificate of approval, rejection sticker . shall be subject to a fine of $500 . "
39:8-9C made me lots of money back in the day. Back in the 80's fraudulent inspection stickers were common and obvious to spot. It was my experience that a good number of people driving around with bad inspection stickers were also uninsured and suspended. Many also had warrants. The ones that had warrants usually wound up in a car or foot pursuit and additional charges.

The other item to consider is if you do go to court they usually add about another $33 court costs to the fine. Practically speaking I don't think there's a lot of avenues the judge has to lower a state specified fine. There are a few lower fines but you'd have to get them to modify the original charges, not likely to happen. Then they would add the court fees and you're back to where you started.
One of my kids recently went to NJ traffic court and the judge charged everyone $500 fine plus $33 costs. That's why I think the easiest option to get this "monkey off your back" is to just pay as is. Going to traffic court often gets so oppressive people agree to pay most anything just to get out of there with the least amount of damage to their driving record.
The judge just decided to charge everyone $500 and $33 court cost. Do you really believe some of the BS that you write?
